It's not opposite the school , and in fact , there are other fast-food places alot closer than what McDonald's is going to be . They actually used a democratic process to get a permit to build . And going by what the organisers of the protest movement say , then it's actually over 800m from the national park . They will not struggle , as while the protesters get arrested one by one for illegally trying to stop the build , McDonald's will continue to lawfully build the new store . How about putting all this effort and energy into getting either the council , the state government , or both , to do something to stop anymore being approved .

Re: Australia: Locals Fight to Stop McDonald’s in their Hills

http://m.theaustralian.com....
McDonald's are not the evil slave driving business, you anti reality people make them out to be. Quite frankly it is a complete insult to the intelligence of everyone in this community. To suggest that those of us, that choose to eat McDonald's once in a blue moon are going to turn into neadathals is completely ignorant. As kit said eating McDonald's is no different to eating a pizza, fish and chips, or Chinese or Indian entrees. Most people don't come and live up here to be vegans or spot lyrebirds, most people come for amenities, big backyards and a reasonably safe environment. I've lived in two places where the environment is way more preciouse and delicate than Tecoma's, both places have McDonald's, and the wildlife and environment have not catastrophically suffered, as the anti mob keep suggesting will happen to the entire Dandenong Ranges. The exaggeration of the importance of the landscape of Tecoma, and the over the top hysteria that McDonald's will destroy the whole mountain is completely ludicrous. Our mountain will be just as beautiful with a Maccas in Tecoma, there will always be twits that drop litter, our job as a community that cares, is not to lay blame but be proactive about it. I find more 7 eleven rubbish and alcohol based litter around the area than anything else. I don't go to the shops where this litter came from carrying on like a pork chop, I pick it up and put it in the bin. Come on people a little less hysteria and little more common sense, please.

Re: Australia: Locals Fight to Stop McDonald’s in their Hills

Also the irony of people who have built in the hills area questioning the impact on flora and fauna seems to have been lost!

Re: Australia: Locals Fight to Stop McDonald’s in their Hills

I have no view either way on this discussion. However, the matter of making particularly nasty comments about people on the Gnome Maccas in Tecoma Facebook page at 4:00 am the other night remains outstanding, and clearly offensive. Did you not respond to that because you had reached the limit of publishable characters, or your publishable character?

Re: Australia: Locals Fight to Stop McDonald’s in their Hills

Brad,
Quaint though your theory is, It's entirely unrealistic to believe that newer residents to the region have come specifically for lyrebirds or shrubs. The real estate boom of the last 10 - 15 years has put most of the traditional baby boomer suburbs out of the price range of most young families who wish to get on the property ladder. Being on the outer fringe of suburban Melbourne and further from the proximity of CBD employment, the region naturally reflects cheaper property prices and always has.

Notwithstanding the constraints of real estate prices, most prospective residents to an area look for schools, amenities, transport, safety and space. A lovely vista or the possibility of a platypus in the park could only ever be described as a charming bonus and without doubt, Tecoma does have those attributes. The obvious failing in your line of argument however, is that the proposed McDonald's will not detract from those attributes. It will be located in the commercial centre of a developed and developing suburb. It will share the business precinct with a plethora of other fast food outlets including two purveyors of cheap pizza, for which cutlery is not a traditional requirement. This would clearly suggest that the residents of the region may not be quite so precious as to what and how they eat as you'd like to imagine.

This neatly brings us to your assumptions on the social makeup of the area. Your belief that most of the more recent inhabitants of Tecoma posses some sort of culturally superior or 'new age' ethic I've already shown to be a figment of your fancy. Your suggestion however that those long standing residents of the area, many of whom have lived there for generations are by neccesity 'low income' and of the low 'educational standard' that you describe is frankly offensive and downright laughable. I ask you, is this how the 'anti-Mcdonald's' activists work? by denigrating those who don't conform to your subcultural world view? Have you ever considered that the hundreds of thousands of Australians who buy the occasional McDonald's meal aren't the low income or poorly educated individuals that you describe? Do we all need to be like you before we meet with your approval, Brad?

You make other frivolus arguments that are barely worth a response. Litter for example, which although a social curse that already exists in the area won't be suddenly worrying any wombats, certainly no more than the impact that the human intervention in the area (including yours) has already impacted. Seriously Brad, This is a McDonald's, not a nuclear waste dump or a puppy abattoir. Your arguments and those of your colleagues appear as shrill and alarmist to the general population of the area as the McCarthyite propaganda of years ago.

Those locals you look down your nose at will occasionally drop into the new store and will carry on with life completely oblivious to the increasing irrelevance of your argument, and your movement will eventually be forgotten like some surreal dream. That's really not such a bad outcome is it?

Re: Australia: Locals Fight to Stop McDonald’s in their Hills

Mmm....
